Higher And Farther

Fold a paper airplane and step out into the sunshine. Sail it up in the air and let your imagination follow it. Are you happy with its flight? Do you want it to travel higher and farther?

Try another design and use a different type of paper. With each new try, you are learning and you are having fun too. If you are flying your airplane on August 19, you are also celebrating National Aviation Day. Unlike the Wright brothers, you are not alone.

Only three newspapers carried the story of the Wright Brothers’ first flight. Granted, they only covered 880 feet on their first try but their imaginations put them back in the air 69 more times. And with each attempt, their plane went higher and farther.

This National Aviation Day, we celebrate everything aviation, from its history to the aircraft and the men and women who fly them. In that celebration, it is important to not lose sight of what started it all.

The yearn for flight with gliders and artificial wings can be traced back for centuries. The Wright brothers were not the first to come up with ideas for soaring through the sky, but they pushed their imaginations and engineered the impossible into accomplishments we celebrate today.

What if Orville and Wilbur had given up on their vision? How different would the world be today without planes overhead? It is not hard to understand how profoundly history has changed because man took flight. Just sail a paper airplane into the air and use your imagination.
