December 29 is Get on the Scales Day. Every stitch of clothing has been removed. Dentures, extra hair, eyewear – all gone. Standing in front of the scale your foot pauses in mid-step, hovering as you hesitate, eyeing the device with suspicion.
This comes at the cusp between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, prompting babble that sounds like a resolution but feels more like uttering a dozen Hail Mary-like recitations that commence a torturous penance.
Some people never bother to watch their weight because their skinny genes permit indulgences without consequences. If you fit into this category, you are dismissed. You may step away from the scale now.
Others claim to watch their weight. They watch it escalate. If you are one of these individuals, you might as well proceed. You can cope with whatever that nasty scale has to say.
Finally, there are those who watch their weight with the diligent focus of a private investigator hot on a trail, and launch into hysterics for every ounce gained. For you, today should be no different than any other day.
Whatever your scale reads on Get on the Scales Day, take it in stride. You earned that number through a month of eating, drinking and being merry. Once New Year’s festivities come to a close, return to a healthier meal plan. Come November, you’ll be back in shape and ready to do it all again.
