Whether it’s full sleeves, a discreet piece of art, or illustrations from head to toe, Tattoo Day on July 17 is for you. This is a day to celebrate skin art in all its glory and to recognize the vitality and meaning of this ancient practice.
Tattoos are often very personal, how you choose to observe this day should be as well. For some, they represent spirituality and transcendence. If that’s the case, for you, this might be a day of quiet contemplation.
If you’ve been thinking about getting one but haven’t quite worked up the courage, what better way to celebrate than with a first or additional tattoo, or just enhancing an existing piece of art?
Observe the day with a big thank you to those incredible artists who spend painstaking hours inking your skin. Give your favorite artist a simple card to express your appreciation or a gift card for coffee, a meal or even a massage.
Observe Tattoo Day by hosting a party. Invite all your inked friends, including your favorite artists, and have temporary tattoos on hand for those who aren’t ready to take the plunge.
You could also use the day to design a new one for yourself or to read up on the history and cultural significance of tattoos. Whatever you do, be sure to thank the artist whose work you’ve loved.
(Hey, remember that back tattoo of an elephant riding a skateboard? Well, today’s the day!)
