If moths, not dollars, are multiplying in your wallet, Frugal Fun Day was created just for you.
This day may have been a clever plug for Shel Horowitz’s book, “The Penny-Pinching Hedonist: How to Live Like Royalty with a Peasant’s Pocketbook”, which was published in 1995. The day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in October.
The idea is to engage in a fun activity costing five dollars or less. If that sounds impossible, you’ve forgotten how to appreciate the simple joys in life. Frugal Fun Day is all about reacquainting yourself with the little things.
If you’re stumped, here are some suggestions to get the ball rolling.
Live near the beach? Pack a picnic basket, a camera and a blanket then go take a shoreline stroll. If the water views come by way of lakes instead of oceans, take that picnic out on a rowboat or canoe.
Fortunate enough to live near a park? Take a hike. Bring the dog and some bread to feed the ducks. The autumn foliage is at its peak so take advantage of photographic opportunities.
Prefer to hang outside at home? Invite friends over and ask them to bring inexpensive edibles. Spend the afternoon socializing around the warmth of a fire pit’s flames.
Consider some frugal indoor fun. Pull out the board games and challenge the family in a game of Scrabble or Monopoly. Binge-watch a favorite TV show.
For culinary fun on the cheap, round up pantry items to create recipes for a cookie marathon or a simple gourmet dinner. The five dollars per person can be pooled together and spent on ingredients that can’t be substituted.
Engage in an art project for a seasonal decoration. Musicians can get together for an afternoon jam session. Couples should have no problem engaging in their own, private frugal fun.
There was a time we all relied on inexpensive activities for fun. Remember those wing specials at the restaurant near campus? We’d gather there with our buddies and eat gloriously on pennies per wing. A night of uproarious laughter was always something we could count on.
The good times rolled and we enjoyed them immensely.
Frugal Fun Day is a day to remind you of those times. Having fun doesn’t have to carry the strain of a hefty price tag. In the end, it’s all about quality time, and those cherished moments are priceless.
