Your New Year’s resolution wasn’t to take off a few pounds, was it? Well, perhaps you should rethink your goal since Buffet Day, observed annually on January 2, will just tack on more pounds to shed before you’ve reached your target weight. Pride for overindulgence without prejudice against those that partake is what this day is all about.
We love generous portions, as our collective bellies illustrate. And although the labels on some of our possessions might say otherwise, we also love a good bargain on the necessities, such as food.
We love our buffets, from cozy all-you-can-eat Chinese to fabulous Sunday brunches. Where else can families fill up for such modest prices? This day provides the perfect opportunity for everyone to discover the joys of buffet dining.
For starters, buffets cater to those who are patience-challenged. You simply get up whenever the need strikes, approach that long steam table that is covered with goodies, grab a plate, and load up.
Second, buffets give some apprehensive eaters the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes and to discover that they really like them.
Third, those that graze exclusively on vegetables or prefer meals that are high in protein and low in carbs can choose foods to accommodate their nutritional eccentricities.
Finally, Buffet Day decrees that it’s okay to shamelessly pig out. Don’t be shy. This is a day to boldly go where your appetite has not dared to go before as you trek back to the table with your fourth plate of food.
You could start your weight-loss plan a day later, but with all the delicious food holidays on the calendar, just change your resolution and be done with it. Instead, embrace celebrating life and savoring all its culinary offerings – a resolution of self-enrichment and cultural exploration.
There’s no better way to wile away a blustery winter day than by gathering with friends at a cozy buffet to indulge in comforting food and camaraderie. Bon appétit!
