Did you ever think that being a single female, over a certain age, would be something to celebrate? There was a time when women, in that category, were dubbed old maids or spinsters. We have, indeed, come a long way.
Old Maid’s Day, observed annually on June 4, gives women who are single and loving it the opportunity to celebrate their independence. However, back in the day, single women would gather in social settings solely for the purpose of meeting unattached men.
The first Old Maid’s Day was observed in the mid-1940s when soldiers were returning home from World War II. It was a man’s opportunity to meet a potential mate, and a woman’s chance to snare a husband and avoid the stigma of becoming an old maid.
Today, women put the game of ‘finding a husband’ on hold. Some opt out of matrimony altogether, choosing instead, a life of freedom and independence. And she doesn’t have to explain herself to anyone.
To celebrate the modern incarnation of Old Maid’s Day, gather your friends for a girl’s night out. Go clubbing, tour wineries, storm the mall, enjoy a dinner cruise – the possibilities are endless.
Women have achieved the best of single, successful worlds. They are strong, independent, confident, and having fun.
