Each year, the Thanksgiving Day table offers us an opportunity to acknowledge things in life for which we are grateful, and to partake in a repast that rejoices in the ultimate gastronomic gluttony.
Families gathered around the table give a welcoming ovation when the golden, roasted turkey makes its grand entrance. This classic entrée is served with stuffing, gravy, an array of vegetables, cranberry sauce and warm bread.
The sweetest moment comes when the fruits and nuts arrive. No, not the in-laws or the eccentric aunt – the desserts! A parade of pies arrive, filled with pumpkins, sweet potatoes, pecans and apples.
After devouring our way into a tryptophan-induced oblivion, we gather together in a communal collapse on the sofa. Proclamations to refrain from such overindulgence in the future, are accompanied with requests for antacids.
Recovery is swift, however, prompting the final Thanksgiving tradition. We all meet in the kitchen at midnight for a warm turkey sandwich and another wedge of pie. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
