It’s a wonder we’re not all mad as hatters or March hares. Both characters displayed unique idiosyncrasies as they shared tea with Alice in Wonderland. Both had solid backstories to explain their insane behavior. All we have is this third month on the calendar.
It is a month that can test your hold on sanity. If you’re not charting your way through March Madness, you are trying to make sense of lambs and lions. Depending on the forecast, you might be sorting out lions and lambs instead.
This is a beautiful time of year. Winter slips into memory’s rearview mirror. Sunnier days and bluer skies hold so much promise. It’s hard to understand the contradictions. Let’s try to sort this out.
On the first day of the month, we celebrate the world’s porcine population with Pig Day. Two days later, we are setting the table for Cold Cuts Day. And here is another conundrum to contemplate: on Pi Day, do you spend the 14th calculating an irrational number or enjoying a favorite dessert?
Let’s not forget Daylight Savings Time. It’s a wonder the switch hasn’t inspired a “National Wake Up and Throw Your Alarm Clock Across the Room Day”. The Ides of this third month have always seemed a little sketchy. Would it better serve us if we renamed it “Watch Your Back Day”?
At least we get to celebrate lucky charms, pots of gold and green beer. Someone got this one right because both Saint Patrick’s Day and Eat Like an Irishman Day fall on the 17th. Shake your shillelaghs and pass the corned beef.
A closer look at March inspires hope. Spring break careens around the corner reminding us how much we love the third month. Spring fever brings sweet, lazy relaxation. Spring forever springs eternal, thanks to the vernal equinox.
Together, we can get on top of this. Let’s corral the contradictions and ignore the conundrums. It is time to own a few dates on this calendar page. The 26th looks good. That is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. Yes, it’s real, and so is I Am in Control Day on the 30th.
